5 Factors That Impact Roof Installation Cost
Posted on: 27 March 2023
Setting your budget is an important part of the planning process when it comes to replacing your roof. It helps to have an understanding of the main factors that influence a roof installation quote so you more accurately compare them.
The following is a list of five things to keep in mind that will impact the cost of your new roofing installation project.
1. Total Size
The size of your roof will have one of the greatest impacts on cost naturally as a smaller roof will cost less because it can be completed more quickly and with fewer materials. The size impact on cost is determined by figuring out the roofing square number. A roofer will use this measurement to quote a basic price covering labor and installation materials.
2. Roof Design
The simplest roof design is the single peak pitched roof. There are only two roofing sides to cover and only one ridge to seal. The lack of valleys also simplifies this design, since valleys require careful work to ensure there are no leaks. The more complicated the roof is, the higher the cost will be due to materials and labor.
3. Accessory Replacement
The flashing around the chimney, rubber boots around plumbing vents, and rooftop ventilation covers along the ridges are examples of roofing accessories that may need to be replaced at the same time as the roof. You may also need to have your eaves rebuilt or soffit vents upgraded. Costs can vary depending on how many of these accessories are on your roof and in need of replacement.
4. Material Choice
Asphalt shingles, metal roofing panels, and clay tiles are some of the most popular residential roofing materials. Asphalt shingles tend to be the lowest-cost option, although there are some more expensive high-end asphalt products. Metal and clay can cost more than asphalt, but these materials tend to have a longer working lifespan so they won't require replacement as often as asphalt shingles.
5. Preparation Needs
Prep work will vary depending on the current state of your roof. The only prep needed in the simplest installation scenario is shingle removal. A more complicated preparation may include replacing damaged decking boards after the shingles are removed, or having to rebuild rotted-out roof eaves. Costs will increase if more preparation is needed, as prep work can require both materials and labor hours to complete.
